Dogs and cats over the ages of six or seven are considered senior pets, but not all senior pets are considered geriatric. Geriatric pets are well advanced in their age for their breed and often have a variety of medical issues. These medical issues may happen concurrently or one after another. At Peace Arch Veterinary Hospital in Surrey, we understand the special care that our geriatric patients need.
What Geriatric Wellness Care Involves
Once your pet has reached the geriatric stages, your pet will need more veterinary care, preventative care, and wellness support. Some of this care you can provide at home, and some can only be provided by a veterinarian. You will need to come in at least twice per year or more to monitor and maintain your geriatric pet’s health.
Pet screenings will be more in-depth, and more bloodwork might be needed to screen for different diseases and things that affect geriatric animals. Our veterinarians will pay special attention to your pet’s teeth and recommend teeth cleanings as needed. Other support for geriatric wellness includes:
- Switching to a prescribed wet or dry food that has a unique formula for weight management or dissolving kidney stones
- Providing veterinarian-approved anti-inflammatories made for pets
- Surgeries as needed
- Changing the location of your pet’s sleeping area if it cannot use the stairs
- Adding extra time in your day to perform longer care routines for your pet
- Giving your pet more rest after a walk
- Avoiding activities that could be painful, such as jogging or hiking
Other Adjustments to Make at Home
You will need to be mindful of slippery floors. Consider adding non-slip materials to slick floors, cleaning up spills right away, and securing the edges of loose area rugs. Keep the walking areas outside free from debris, snow, and ice. Create a special place in the fridge for medication that must remain cold. Be gentler overall, and as always, provide lots of cuddles for your furry friend.
