If your pet is scheduled for surgery, it can be normal to have some questions about anesthesia. Anesthesia is used for many purposes, including spaying or neutering, dental cleaning, and minor or major operations. At Peace Arch Veterinary Hospital serving Surrey, BC, British Columbia, we provide animal care and anesthesia. If you need a veterinarian in Surrey, we can help. Learn more about pet anesthesia below.
Pet Anesthesia Safety
The idea of putting your pet to sleep is stressful and nerve-wracking. However, technology and advancements have made anesthesia a very safe procedure. There are, however, administration and monitoring protocols that should be followed. Our staff can help you understand pet anesthesia.
Before Anesthesia
Before getting anesthesia, a veterinarian at our animal hospital may need to draw blood. The blood work will determine if it is safe to administer anesthesia to your pet. It could be dangerous and risky to have your pet receive it without bloodwork.
If any serious issues are found, your pet’s surgery is postponed until the problem is corrected. Typically, minor problems are not enough to stop the procedure from moving forward. We will evaluate and discuss your pet’s results at our office with the help of a veterinarian at our animal hospital.
After Surgery
Just like humans, you can expect your pet to be in some pain after the anesthesia wears off. We will provide you with pain medication to help. Also, your pet may be nauseous and tired after receiving anesthesia. Your pet may want gentle and compassionate care following surgery. We recommend a secure and comfortable location for at least 24 hours following surgery. Our team can also provide follow-up appointments to ensure your pet is recovering well.
Anesthesia Risks
Medication always has some risks of complications, such as an unexpected allergic reaction that may cause an upset stomach or vomiting. We usually require pets to avoid eating for 12 hours before surgery, so they have an empty stomach. It’s impossible to follow this protocol for emergency surgery, but our team will closely monitor your pet after the procedure.
